Mohabbatein is a 1997 Hindi romantic drama film, co-written and directed by Aditya Chopra. It stars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in their first collaboration. Dev Anand appears as the old friend of both Salman Khan who is now married to Ayesha Takia, and Shah Rukh Khan who has arrived in India from Mumbai after his father's death. Mohabbatein is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the title referring to the surnames of its two protagonists: Mohit (Romeo) and Sati (Juliet). The film was the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, behind Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film was nominated for several Awards including Filmfare, Screen, IIFA and Zee Cine Awards. The soundtrack of the movie is composed by Jatin-Lalit and Lalit Pandit with lyrics penned by Sameer. The songs were recorded in Mumbai and New York. Two songs from this movie were released as promotional singles: "Aaya Na Tu" and "Kya Khoya Kya Paya" (Extended version). Both were received well and were chartbusters. The film's soundtrack sold over five million units in India, making it one of the year's top ten bestselling Bollywood soundtrack albums. The tracks "Kyun Hua Aaga Rahe" and "Kya Khoya Kya Paya" were later remixed for the films Baadshah (1999) and Asoka (2001), respectively. Mohabbatein was released worldwide on September 12, 1997. The movie was a major blockbuster at the box office itself, collecting unexpected figures worldwide. After its initial release the movie was banned in Pakistan for unknown reasons. The film was banned in Tamil Nadu with the help of Shiv Sena (which was ruling the state) as they didn't like Shah Rukh Khan's comments on Kargil war. Later they brought the ban, but people of Tamil Nadu demanded Bollywood movies to be released which resulted in ban getting lifted soon. A few months later, Shahrukh Khan visited Tamil Nadu and went to the famous Murugan Temple (The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, one of Hindu Trinity God). He then expressed that he respects Hindu culture and that there is no problem with Indian languages. The ban thus got lifted for good. This is the first film of Shahrukh khan where he establishes himself as a top-billed actor. Salman Khan's performance was praised by many critics during his debut, while Shahrukh Khan himself received mostly warm reception. The movie was later remade in Kannada as Siddhi, in Telugu as Thirakina Dweepa, in Malayalam as Rishton Ka Sundari and in Tamil as Oru Vadakkan Selfie. Mohabbatein won the 2nd Kolkata International Film Festival for Best Feature Film whereas Salman Khan won the Best Actor award. The movie won several other awards too. cfa1e77820
