Fritzing 0.9.4 is a software package for designing and documenting electronics as well as PCBs from the REV Eagle design environment, now available for download from Github, with an emphasis on visualizing schematic circuits. In this post we will show how to get started with Fritzing 0.9.4 for your own use by outlining how it can be used to make your own circuit diagrams, 3D printable enclosures, and PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). We will also look at how to create your own components, how to place the components onto your PCBs in an efficient way, and how to export your schematic and PCB designs in scalable vector graphics (SVG) format or files for PCB fabrication. Fritzing is a Drawing Tool for Schematics, PCBs and 3D printing. It doesn't support creating firmware, nor does it support simulating circuits. There are alternatives available for these however. Stuart Middleton created the first version of Fritzing in early 2007 during his Ph.D. studies on graphical programming languages at the Technical University Berlin, Germany under Dr.-Ing Frieder Burdack . The idea originated during a workshop with Dr. Detlef Vollmar on visual programming, where Middleton designed a PCB for an electronic device. It was an exercise to design it without using a schematic editor or any graphical software, instead using only pen and paper. After drawing the diagram he scanned the image into his computer and proceeded to draw the components in separate layers. Frieder Burdack suggested that he could create a tool for this purpose. Fritzing was created to help electronics engineers design electronics without having to learn computer-aided design (CAD) tools like Eagle which are very different from what they are used to working with. For Middleton, Fritzing was to be an open source software tool to provide easy reproducible designs. However, after creating the first version of Fritzing, Middleton found that electronic design hobbyists would often approach him seeking help reproducing their circuit diagrams. The following year he found himself helping people solve problems which the tools could not solve. He realized that there is demand for this sort of software and has since developed Fritzing into its current state as a solution for these problems. Because of this demand, Middleton decided to continue developing Fritzing after finishing his Ph.D., and it is now free and open source (under the GNU General Public License (GPL) license ) under the MIT License . As the software has evolved since its early development, it has grown to be more than just a drawing tool. It is an electronics diagramming software package that supports schematic circuits, PCB design, 3D printing, and related tools. It's purpose is to provide an accessible mechanism for rapidly creating complex circuit diagrams. It does this by using simple visual components to draw schematic diagrams (similar to electronic circuit boards). It can import CAD files (such as Eagle) and create schematic diagrams similar to the ones produced by the CadSoft Eagle schematic editor or Altium Designer PCB design software .
